Two wheeler vehicles mainly bikes and scooters are a major statement of fashion in modern Nepal.
Specially young generation tend to force their parents to buy latest and best looking bikes and scooties
more for showing off than for actual use, however they are used too. Ladies generally go for scooties,
however, some do use the mightiest bikes too for showoffs. For men, higher the CC, better the bike.
Bajaj’s Pulsar is the most wanted and most popular bike in Nepal. Other bikes in fashion, so to say, are
Kawasaki Ninja, Hero Honda Karizma, ZMR, Apache. Most of the bikes are manufactured in India and are
available in Nepal cheaper than international brands so indian scooters and bikes are most purchased in
Nepal.

Fashion of Gadgets

The younger generation in Nepalese, generally who have decent source of income, are very much into
use of latest gadgets. In past mobile phones with simple functionalities and ipods were the gadgets
in use. But with the growth of technology, more and more gadgets are being introduced in Nepalese
markets and people are buying them for use to some extent and for showing off to some extent. The
gadgets in demand at this time are IPhone4s and Samsung Galaxy S3 which are the leading smartphones
with capabilities almost of a computer. Other gadgets include camcoders, digital camera, laptops,
notebooks, tablets etc.

Trends of Footwear in Nepal

Traditionally people either did not use any footwear at all, or used handmade wooden/leather slippers.
But that was past and currently footwear is also considered a major fashion statement. These days the
most popular footwear is converse shoes which can be worn formally or informally , with jeans or with
cotton, with shorts, skirts or pants. Its versatility is a major reason for its popularity. For shorts and one
pieces, women generally use high heels and flat slippers as per the cloth but while wearing jeans, closed
shoes and converse are widely used. Latest growing trend for women include use of thin slippers.

Formal and Informal dresses used in Nepal

Formal dresses are generally used while going to offices, schools and functions/parties. For men, formal
dress includes Shirts, Cotton pants, Coats, Tie and Leather shoes. For ladies, formal dress includes Kurta-
suruwal, sarees, Cotton Pants, Skirts, Shirts. But due to lack of fashion sense in rural areas and for less
privileged people financially, maintaining formal dress may not be possible and so may wear what they
have.

Informal dress are used in all other times, going out , having fun, at homes etc. For men, informal dress
most of the times means jeans, tshirts, halfpants with pair of sunglasses and slippers/converse shoes/
trendy shoes. For girls, one piece, shorts, mini-skirts, choose-pants, t-shirts, converse shoes, high heels
etc.

Changing trends in pants

The fashion of pants started in the late 80s with surge of use in belly-bottom pants, which was made
famous in Nepal by international bands and Indian movies. Then after, parallel pants became the new
trend with all youth banking on it to make their fashion statements. Then came choose-pants, those
that are fitting the body from hips to bottom of legs. Even the youngsters in schools started wearing these
types of pants and some schools had to ban such pants to be worn by students to maintain discipline.
Then came the time for quarter/half pants. These days boys still wear carwash/monkey wash pants and
girls are more into shorts and one pieces. Some pictures of belly-bottom, parallel and choose pants are below:
